COHOUSING COMMUNITIES

Cohousing was first brought to the United States from Denmark by architects Katie McCamant and Chuck Durrett.  In 1988, they published their book, Cohousing:  A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves.

There are over 90 completed cohousing communities in the United States, and there are over 100 communities under construction or in the process of formation.  View list of communities.

Northern California cohousing communities include:
1.  Davis -- Muir Commons -- the first cohousing community in the United States
     26 townhomes on 2.9 acres, completed in 1991

2.  Emeryville -- Doyle Street Cohousing
     14 loft-style homes on .3 acres, completed in 1992
